"So my immediate thought would be a punishment in the form of a life for a life and maybe a monetary punishment for assault."

“I can agree to that notion.”

"Life for a life, limb for a limb is simple enough, but, wouldn't that be a waste of life force? The dead don't learn their lessons as well as the living." Selena sits up in her chair, now bouncing her leg and fidgeting with one of the rings on her fingers.

"Dragon lady's right. It's a waste of life." Mari's eyes widen when she realizes what she's said. "I uh, I mean, Knightmaster Selena. She's right. Murder for murder just makes more dead people."

Miquella looks at the knightmaster. "What would you suggest Knightmaster Selena?" He pays her close attention waiting her response.

"I mean, for the most part, I'm good with life for a life, but, for the sake of preserving life force, imprisonment? Either in a cell, or out working for the kingdom? Military conscription? Fines obviously, but then we get to what if the assaulter can't pay the fine? Do we take their property? Livestock? Homes?"
