React as your character to me means to respond as your character would to a situation, statement, event, ect. Even if it is not how you would react, if your character would do it, just do it. In that, it is also a reminder that everyone is reacting as their character would and you shouldn't take anything personally. Just because I would kill you as my character does not mean I don't like you in real life.
